Horsetooth Fort Collins, CO Fishing Report

2025 Outlook – Horsetooth will have good smallmouth action and the opportunity for some true trophy walleye. New walleye regulations starting this year are designed to manage Horsetooth as a trophy walleye fishery, the sampling by CPW showed over 40% of the walleye caught over 20 inches. There is a good population of larger trout, some nice wipers, and a decent population of bluegills.

  • Spring (March-May) – Warm days in April can have the smallmouth and trout to get active. May get the smallmouth moving shallow and turning on the walleye bite.
  • Summer (June-Aug) – Early June is typical the best time for smallmouth to be in the shallows. Later in the summer the bass move out to deeper structure. This can provide opportunities for low light topwater action and casting jigs. The walleyes are caught casting and trolling, as the summer moves on the night bite , especially around the full moon, for walleye can get hot.
  • Fall (Sept-Nov) – Provides deeper bites for bass and walleye. The trout start pushing towards the shore and can be a great bite.
